When pursuing academic excellence, we often prioritize learning and achievement over personal well-being. However, welfare is not only crucial for overall health but also plays a significant role in facilitating learning and accomplishment. As your Deputy President (Welfare), I would commit to proactive support.
Over the past 4+ years, I’ve identified areas where student support may be improved, engaged with relevant committees and stakeholders, and advocated for social justice and students' rights. Notably, as Working Class Officer, I secured an additional £500,000 annually for the Imperial Bursary. I have also trained personal tutors in supporting student welfare through MindHealth for Medical Students. Recently, I co-founded Imperial's Neurodiversity Society to raise awareness of neurodivergent issues.
My key priorities as your DPW are:
1. Mental Health:
a. Enhancing proactive mental health support through learning analytics, better tutor training, and open staff/student discussions.
b. Addressing barriers to mental health support including stigma, affordability, and cultural barriers.
c. Implementing the Mental Health Strategy across all campuses and student groups
2. Identity:
a. Reviewing the Liberation & Community Networks for optimal representation of Imperial’s marginalised groups.
b. Refining the Union’s disciplinary procedures to ensure students can freely express their identity.
3. Accessibility:
a. Ensuring reasonable adjustments are made for disabled and neurodivergent students.
b. Advocating for more postgraduate funding while supporting students’ living costs.
c. Supporting university transition, particularly for working class and neurodivergent individuals.
d. Facilitating more alcohol-free social interactions.
