Chelsea Brown
Dear Voters,
My name is Chelsea Brown. I am a 4th year medical student currently undertaking a BSc in Cardiovascular Sciences. I am excited to announce my candidacy for the role of ICSMU’s Academic Officer for BSc years.
Throughout my academic journey, this year has been a standout experience, marked by significant personal and academic growth owed to ICSMU’s dedication to promote academic excellence and better working conditions for students.
As a tutor and academic representative for Cardiovascular Sciences, I understand the value of communication, empathy, and leadership. By adaptating communication skills to build a rapport, I am able to identify student concerns with respect, empathy, and sensitivity, while actioning positive change alongside staff. Witnessing the continuous efforts of ICSMU, coupled with my own desire to improve life for students within my own cohort, I am inspired to progress to the role of Academic Officer so that I can effect positive change for every student undertaking their BScs, and advocate for every student.
I propose two key changes: firstly, a centralised provision of resources given as a part of the standardised BSc handbook. This would provide guidance relevant to in-course assessments across all BScs, detailing statistical testing, critical appraisal, time management and more, to fairly equip all students with consistent knowledge. Secondly, a centralised Q&A Insendi portal that can offer support for specific academic queries would allow ongoing evaluation of the BSc year.
Thank you for your consideration.
