Hi, my name is Adheesha and I have two years of experience working for SurgSoc. This year, I served as a Personnel Officer for Trauma 2023, SurgSoc’s annual conference. Last year, (2022 – 2023), I was on SurgSoc’s subcommittee and the Junior Anatomy Series Mock Creator team.
As a personnel officer, I recruited demonstrators for workshops at Trauma, which involved me reaching out to over a thousand contacts. I also communicated and resolved issues with confirmed demonstrators. As a subcommittee member, I helped organise Specialty Skills Weekend and assisted with the execution of numerous events. I therefore understand many aspects of SurgSoc’s operations.
This year, I was Neuroscience Society’s conference chair, leading the organisation of the society’s annual conference, which drew over 100 delegates. In this role, I navigated through the Union bureaucracy required to hold an event, including budgets, risk assessments, event proposals and room bookings. This, together with my SurgSoc experience, means I am well equipped to organise events of my own, which is what a General Executive does.
If elected, I will push to organise a remotely held series on surgical innovations featuring speakers from around the world. There are exciting innovations happening in countries that we don’t typically recruit speakers from, such as Germany and Japan. I will also push to organise a few talks about humanitarian surgery, perhaps together with Imperial Friends of MSF. More and more students are becoming interested in this area, likely due to the horrific wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
