James Owen Villanueva
Biology: Vice President
Hello everyone! I’m Owen (he/him), a first-year running for the role of BioSoc Vice President. I am a big plant lover and I plan on going into phytology and botany in the future!
My experience serving on the committee of "In2ScienceUK'' (a placement programme that diversifies underrepresented STEM sectors), and as my sixth-form’s Head of PR and Media provides me with the transferable skills needed for this leadership role.
If elected, I would primarily focus on:
- System – Establishing a network throughout our degree is essential for the next steps in our careers. From facilitating workshops and study groups to inviting guest speakers, my goal is to provide enriching experiences that enhance our knowledge and passion for biology.
- Symbiosis – A community that provides feedback to one another is crucial. As a vice president, I put the interests of the BioSoc members first and listen to their requests. My ‘Student Voice and Leadership’ training with the non-profit ‘Unloc’ further developed my awareness of how to speak for peers and affect positive change, allowing me to effectively fulfil the role.
- Serotonin – The intellectual and social aspects of university life are equally important. It would be my duty as an official to ensure there are social and academic opportunities that are accessible, fitting, and fun for every member!
My top three artists are Kali Uchis, SZA, and Omar Apollo. Please feel free to reach out for music recommendations, book suggestions, or to just say hi!
