One of the leading causes of death in the world is cancer. This shows how oncology society is important in raising interest to help in the battle against cancer. Through running several conferences, students are introduced to what’s happening in the forefront of innovative surgery and research against cancer.
As part of the oncology society subcommittee, I had the pleasure of helping out in this year’s conference, which really made me admire how well these events are run. Hence, inspiring me to run for treasurer, to aid with the running of these events. Having chaired the TedX talks at my school, I have experience in being able to organise a speaker-based event, in which I was in charge of budgeting the amount of money provided by the school to ensure the running of a successful event. Furthermore, I was also in charge of organising fundraising events for a charity, in which I had to handle a lot of money and keep tight calculations on all the money that had been raised and spent.
As treasurer some of my main aims would be:
- Maintaining up to date records of all transactions that have been undertaken
- Keeping all parties involved in the loop as to the budget that they are provided
- Providing advice on how to stay in budget, having had to overcome the difficult experience of sticking to budget while organising my TedX talks
- Aiding the fundraiser officer using the skills I gained from organising my own fundraising events
