Thevinya Gurugama
Hi everyone! I'm Thevinya, a second year medic and I'd like to be your core committee member this year. For me, Immunology in POM was not a breeze. But, in hindsight, it is quite systematic and less daunting and it was the immunology tutorials that helped me gain a better understanding. Immunology plays a key role in translational medicine with the introduction of immunotherapy for instance. I was a member of the SCORPIO study investigating the impact of obesity on the humoral immune response against the vaccine for SARS-Cov-2
As the core committee member, I believe it is a huge responsibility to bring out the best of the committee members to guide the efficient running of the society. I will co-ordinate with the academic officers to organise the tutorials consistently, and also bridge the gap between professionals and medical students by finding more opportunities and organising more workshops for those keen on pursuing a career in immunology.
Ive learnt and demonstrated the importance of teamwork, clear communication and problem solving having helped organise the Sapphire ball with over 1000 guests for 2 consecutive years. As the head of marketing in Sri Lankan society, I gained useful skills in using canva and promoting on social media which I believe will come in handy when promoting events and tutorials.
I will face challenges along the way but I am a resilient and hardworking individual so I look forward to working with everyone to help others find immunology as fascinating as I do!
