Niall Randall Carrera
Dear Materials cohort,
I am a second year undergraduate who became interested in studying materials science after reading the go-to personal statement book, Stuff Matters, by Mark Miodownik. His story telling and simple explanations of confuzzling topics drew me in to the wild and wonderful world of materials science. After meeting him recently at the Novo Nordisk prize ceremony I became inspired to do the same.
I believe materials science is an essential foundation of human development, with every major time period of development named after a different material (we currently reside in the Silicon age, much better than the Bronze ages). Despite this, materials science remains underrecognised and underapprecaited, which is evident as I have to tell every family member that is study engineering.
Therefore, as your new magazine officer I would take pride in high quality written work about existing science and fun new developments in a way that is accessible to most. My goal is for even your friends and family to be able to read the latest issue and receive great joy so that even they can eagerly await the latest issue of the magazine, and in turn help materials science to gain the reputation and recognition that it so deserves.
Thanks for reading.
