Computational Biology: Events Officer
Hello, I am Bella! I am a first-year Biochemistry student from Australia who is interested in the intersection between computing and biochemistry (specifically predicting protein structure!), and would love to foster members' passion for this rapidly developing and incredibly exciting field.
As an events officer, my ambitions surround equipping society members with the skills and connections to thrive in this field. Specifically, I would love to:
- Host fortnightly talks from experts in industry and academia.
- Bring back a regular 'Journal Club' to get students comfortable discussing and critiquing academic literature.
- Host informal colloquiums that allow members to delve into an area of interest and share it in an open and supportive environment. Presenting to an audience is scary, and I hope by providing members with regular opportunities to share their ideas it can become less daunting.
- Introduce a peer mentorship system that allows people from various courses, degree types and backgrounds to share what they are currently working on and bounce ideas off of one another.
- and last but not least... more coding workshops!
I believe that my strong organisational skills combined with my outgoing nature and passion for computational biology will make me well suited to this role. Regardless of the election outcome, I am very much looking forward to be a part of the society in any way I can!
