Hey Guys! It’s Shahmir - your current Community Chair. I’ve thrown myself into so many societies at Imperial, and the breadth of societies we have is one of the best things about student life. I want to make the Union work better for every society so you can focus on what matters most - having FUN.
I’ve been listening to society leaders and these are the biggest issues they face:
Faster Response Times:
- Overhaul the clunky email system and introduce a proposal-tracking tool (similar to how eActivities handles finance) to monitor progress efficiently.
- Push for more Union staff to speed up approvals and prevent requests from getting stuck in limbo.
- Ensure management groups are proactive in reaching out and guiding societies through the system, rather than leaving them waiting for updates.
Fairer & More Accessible Funding:
- Continue refining the annual budgeting system to ensure grants are allocated fairly without some societies over-asking and causing others to get scaled down.
- Reform our sponsorship policy to support societies transitioning away from fossil fuel companies.
Better Event & Trip Management:
- A bigger and better Welcome Fair with more indoor space, so rain doesn’t ruin it again.
- Streamline minibus booking and test procedures to cut wait times
Making the Union More Inclusive:
- Improve support for international students through targeted outreach, multilingual resources, and clearer communication.
