Council Chair

Hello! I’m running for re-election as Council Chair.

At Imperial, I’ve held multiple leadership positions, including:

  • Council Chair
  • RCSU Vice President Welfare
  • Physics Departmental Wellbeing & Year Rep

This year, I’ve worked to make Council more inclusive, transparent, and accessible, but I know there’s more to do. Many students don’t know what Council is – I want to change that.

Council is the democratic voice of Imperial students, where we shape policy and hold the Union accountable, ultimately ensuring our Union represents and works for us.

The Union is currently reviewing its democratic structures, likely leading to major changes to Council. It’s crucial to have someone with experience and expertise leading Council to ensure this transition is smooth and effective. With first-hand insight into the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of our existing systems, I can ensure the new structures don’t repeat past mistakes.

I’m committed to facilitating new ways of engaging students in Council’s decision-making. This year I trialled a new approach to Officer Trustee scrutiny and piloted a forum-style Council meeting, making discussion more dynamic and productive. I also wrote online meeting summaries, to save students trudging through lengthy minutes to see what decisions were made.

As Council Chair, I pledge to continue striving to make Council:

  • Inclusive: empowering all students to voice their concerns.
  • Transparent: ensuring decision-making processes are clear.
  • Accessible: reducing barriers to participation.

How will I achieve this?

  • Inviting a wider group of student reps to Council.
  • Clearly communicating new democratic structures.
  • Revamping Council’s online presence.
