Hey everyone, I’m Basit, studying MechEng and running for Student Trustee!
I’m currently working as a StudentShaper collaborating with senior staff members at the Educational Development Office at Imperial for reforms in Assessments and Feedback across the Faculty of Engineering as well as all other departments. Additionally, through having been Student Ambassador and Academic Rep to the Dept. of Mechanical-Engineering, I have a lot of experience in communicating and advocating persuasively for student voices to Union and College staff.
My roles have allowed me to hear a lot of different student, staff and external opinions on Imperial, its policies, procedures and development plans and have put me in a position where I can understand many different sides of the story. These perspectives within the College and the Union mean I can find ways to negotiate compromises that other people cannot.
As Student Trustee, I will be able to advocate more strongly for:
- Developing Current Union Strategies: Ensuring the Union’s EDI, mental-health, and sustainability strategies are actively implemented and reviewed for effectiveness.
- Addressing Affordability & Cost of Living: Fighting rising costs on campus, more subsides and better financial-support for students; advocating for lower rents in student-halls; more support for those not in halls.
- Improving Mental-Health & Widening Participation: Reducing wait times, increasing mental-health funding; ensuring better support for students from underprivileged backgrounds.
- Simplifying Bureaucracy & Transparency: Reviewing outdated Union and College policies, ensuring clear communication, support for student-run activities, and student invovement in decision-making.
