Kevin Jang
Earth Science & Engineering (UG): Departmental Wellbeing Representative
Hi, I'm Kevin, a current wellbeing rep at ESE :)
The past 6 months as a rep have been deeply rewarding and I gained new insights into how ESE and ICU are run (including their problems). I also had the honour of being selected as the ICU Rep of the Month in November. ESE is very fortunate to have dealt with things in-house in the past without the need to escalate things to the ICU or the faculty level - my aim is to continue this trend which the past ESE dep reps have built upon their successors.
Feedback / Communication
- Allow wider range of channels for collecting feedback in ESE (open & closed)
- Follow ups: Students should be notified of what happens at SSCC, its outcomes and changes made
- Closing the feedback loop: Reps should share their little wins more!
- Better connections between year and dep reps
Assessments
- Wellbeing and academics are interlinked; one being poor often affects the other
- Most modules in ESE are either fully coursework or exam-based (students should get a say in how they are assessed)
- Two extreme end-members of assessment methods impact wellbeing - anxiety, work-life balance & burnout
- Unsuitable for most students as individual learning needs vary
- As a dep rep I will advocate for more inclusive, accessible assessments, reducing high-stakes pressure
Sense of belonging
- Bridging a gap between student groups – ESE is relatively small, and we can use this to our advantage
- Improving existing networks – RSM parents scheme dwindled after term 1
