Asaavari Kaur

Sikh: Secretary

Vaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaheguru Ji Ki Fateh,

My name is Asaavari Kaur and I am running for the position of Sikh Society’s secretary.

I’ve been taught the history, the philosophy and the way of Sikhi for as long as I can remember. Whether as a helper of the Children’s Gurudwara back when I was seven or when I’m sat with my dad and brother practising Shabads and taking the Vaakh at home.

I view Sikhism as a lot more than being in a gurudwara once in a while and want to be able to bring some of my ideas to Sikhsoc!

My thoughts include:

  • Gurmukhi workshops: I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to write and read Gurmukhi and want to be able to pass that on to everyone that’s interested.
  • Meditation sessions: Right from Guru Nanak, the idea of meditating has been a cornerstone of the Sikh mindset and will also be a good way of destressing before exam season!
  • Debates: Sikhi, as a way of life, has always encouraged open conversations and in today’s day and age there are so many interesting opinions that we have access to. What better way to discuss them than a debate?
  • Tapping into the huge Sikh network in the UK: Sikhs in Academia, and many other organisations exist that can help us extend our networks.

As secretary, I will work alongside the committee to plan and organise exciting and intellectually stimulating events for all of you.

Hoping for your support!
