“ICUMS Welfare, a guiding light
Lending support, Malaysians unite”
- Isabel Chan, 1st year medicine
Moving to the UK for sixth form was a challenging experience - I remember feeling incredibly lonely, navigating a new environment without a strong support system.
The same could not be said about my transition to university. After only two short days (and one very sleep deprived night) at our annual pre-departure freshers’ camp, I knew I had found my home away from home. Every Malaysian face at Imperial is a friendly one, a pillar of support I can always turn to.
As Welfare Officer, I hope to ensure that no one feels alone in their journey here. Whether it’s fostering connections, reducing stress & anxiety, answering any questions or just lending a listening ear, I’m committed to creating a space where we all feel like we truly belong.
In addition to continuing existing welfare initiatives previously implemented, a few of my goals include:
- Improve Offer Holder Sessions: Include a first-year accommodation guide and offer hybrid in-person and online session
- Additional Pre-Departure events: Organise gatherings for freshers in different states
- Strengthen Accommodation Communities: Create accomodation-specific group chats and a roommate matching system.
- Course Group Chats: Connect freshers with seniors for academic advice and mentorship.
- Campus Tours: Offer guided tours by seniors and annotated maps to help freshers navigate campus.
- Enhance Buddy Families: Create more close knit and active families
(Plan of action is explained in more detail in the internal ICUMS manifesto.)
Thank you for your consideration!
