When I hear other departments talk about how they are the best here at Imperial, I think about the ways to tell them they are all fighting for second place after Materials. Whilst it is true we have the best teaching staff, the funnest society socials and objectively the best looking building in the university, many would shrug these off as "bias" or "opinions". Well I intend to give them something they can't deny, cold hard facts. Imagine not only being able to brag about having the best socials, but also having the moral high ground in that they are the most environmentally sustainable too. It is my belief that always striving for improvement is a core part of our department, and with sustainability especially becoming more and more of a pressing issue, it was this that originally got me interested in materials in the first place. To achieve this, I would work on continuing to provide visits from companies or projects focusing on the wide range of sustainability sectors and increasing the guest lectures on research done externally as well as in the department. I would also work on ensuring all socials are as sustainable as possible, even if it is as simple as finding the (cheapest) pub with the lowest carbon footprint in London. Materials is already one of the best departments for sustainability and environmental impact, but I believe that the right focus we can become the clear frontrunner across the university and country as a whole.
