Haemotology... what can I say? I love everything to do around this subject, haemostasis really gets my heart racing. Von Willebrand factor is probably my favourite molecule of all time.
Lots of people just order a full blood count and say the job's done and dusted - but no one ever truly appreciates how intricate a full blood count is.
In a full blood count, you get to see a snapshot of what 8% of your body weight is doing immediately. How large the blood cells are, how many blood cells there are, how your immune system is functioning - the whole lot.
But wait, there's more.
Did you really think a full blood count is the only haematological test which can be done. There are countless tests - direct antiglobulin test, bleeding times, APTT, PT, INR, ANA, ESR, glucose, TFTs, LFTs, ABGs, VBGs, and the list goes on... Haematology is the study of everything.
I love haematology.
