Obstetrics & Gynaecology: Year 5 Academic Officer

Hello everyone, I’m Nagme, currently going through the trenches of fifth-year revision.

This year, I had the chance to attend some ICOGS events, including the final journal club, and work alongside society members through collab events via my role on the Paeds Soc subcommittee. Even with limited time, those events showed me what ICOGS is about: passionate people, brilliant discussions, and a space where students genuinely support each other.

My experience includes serving as Academic Officer for Clinical Genetics, organising CPA and OSCE tutoring schemes, helping with the Paediatrics Conference 2025, and co-planning mock PACES events with other societies. I've learned what goes into building academic support — both when things go smoothly and when (even the back up) plans need quick thinking and flexibility.

But let’s be honest — the biggest qualification I have right now is that I’m in it. I’m living through the fifth-year experience in real time, and it’s… a lot. I know how challenging it can be, and that gives me a very real understanding of the kind of academic support that actually makes a difference — and, just as importantly, how and when to offer it.

Looking ahead to sixth year, I’ve thought carefully about how to manage my time, taken advice from upper years, and made the decision to commit myself fully to one society. I want to channel all the skills I’ve developed throughout medical school into something I’m truly passionate about, and something I hope to pursue in the future.
