When saying the words 'infectious disease', hazmat suits, isolation bubbles and undesired reminders of lockdown spring to mind. Since it is not as common a speciality, placement does not do much until later years to dissuade us from this. However, to me, ID is one of the most engaging aspects of medicine. Histories need to be all encompassing, with even the most minor of details potentially having massive impact.
I have been fortunate to witness this during my BSc project, where I am assessing the evolution of drug resistant mutations in perinatal HIV-1. Having been fortunate to experience both the research and clinical aspects of ID, I would love to have the opportunity to organise events for more to explore this specialty.
Having held several leadership positions over the last few years, such as Vice-President of O&G Society as well as Friends of MSF, I hope to be able to contribute organisational and communication skills I have learnt over the years. Furthermore, as ID is such a broad topic, I think it would be incredibly beneficial to have events where sub-specialists came to share about their area of expertise. As I already have contacts in the form of researchers and clinicians, I believe that together with the future committee, this is definitely something we could bring into fruition, and hope that you give me the chance to do so.
