Council Representative (PG Engineering)

Hi all, I am Deniz and eager to represent YOU as the PG Council Rep for Engineering. My vision focuses on ensuring our wellbeing during our intense studies. If elected, my main objective will be building a platform across London universities aimed at increasing the UKRI-set London allowance for PG salaries from £2,000 (set in 1992) to a level of £6,000 (should be today, based on official data) per year. The proposal to build this platform, led by me as the Chemical Engineering Departmental Rep, passed the Union Council recently (https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/your-union/how-were-run/committees/23-24/Union_Council/file/7362). With your support, I am eager to lead this initiative in the upcoming year. Of course, I will also be available to listen and address your different needs and requests as well. I have a record on delivering my objectives. Last year as Departmental Rep, I worked with our department administration to adjust wages, highlighting the relatively lower wage increase for departmentally-funded students compared to inflation, and the lower GTA rates compared to other departments. Accordingly, departmental scholarships increased 5%, and our GTA rates increased 23% this year. Moreover, leading our departmental PhD committee, I organised around 10 social events (end-of-year party, summer party, Oxford daytrip, bouldering, picnic, breakfasts…), aligned our career events with our students’ career objectives via surveys, and built focus groups to facilitate student connections. My vision has been making our department home for everyone, and now I am eager to extend that commitment to the wellbeing of all engineering students!
