Anika Sharma
Hi, I’m Anika! I’m a second year medic with an interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and am looking to get more involved with Sexpression. I am passionate about joining the committee because I think it is so important to provide sexual education in a fun, engaging way to students from a young age. I’ve learned a lot about sexual health and its history through reading, gaining obstetric work experience and presenting talks on the subject. My previous experience includes being the head of Junior Medical Society in my school, where I regularly organised events such as dissections and bake sales to raise funds for the national AIDS trust. I have also presented talks in the society such as the history of women’s health which was inspired by reading the book ‘Unwell Women’, and after my Gynaecological work experience at St Thomas’ hospital I presented a talk on sexual health and contraception. Through these experiences, I’ve learned how to lead a team and plan smooth-running events despite being put under pressure. The talks I have presented have improved my communication skills and ability to engage a large audience. I feel that this experience is crucial for this role because as events officer I would have to consistently manage a team and plan a wide range of events.
I have many ideas for future Sexpression events, including:
- Charity runs/ sports days
- Joint fundraising campaigns with icogs and societies from other universities
- Annual Sexpression dinner + quiz night
