Plastic Surgery: Microsurgery Conference Chair

Hello, my name is Joshua, and I’m an incoming sixth year medical student with a strong interest in plastics (particularly microsurgery). My plastics surgery journy began when a plastic surgeon asked me a simple question: why do we call it plastic surgery? Being a (naive) medical student, I guessed something about implants. The answer (the greek word, plastos, meaning to mold) was something I initially didn’t understand. Having had the opportunity to observe, scrub-in, and assist in hundreds of hours of plastics cases (including several microsurgery cases), I have seen firsthand the wizardry plastic surgeons perform with tissues on a daily basis from life-saving skin grafts for burns to regaining the use of their hands.

I would be incredibly excited to organize the annual student-led microsurgery conference. With my experiences, I am uniquely positioned to offer students insight into microsurgery and create a truly streamlined and informative microsurgery conference. Moreover, I have experience organizing events and teams, through the multiple research projects I’ve led (some of which were published!) and volunteer experiences I’ve organized. My most recent project was leading a taster session for prospective medical students (A-level students) at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, which was praised by both participating students and consultants.

In conclusion, I aim to create a great experience for all students and hope I will be able to provide a truly educational conference. If you’re interested in plastics, hand surgery, or medical research, feel free to reach out!
