Physics (UG): Year One Academic Representative

Hi everyone, my name is Inaaya Ijaz, and I’m running to be your Year One Academic Representative for Physics. As someone new to Python and who sometimes finds it daunting to ask questions mid-lecture, I understand the challenges many of us face in adjusting to university life. My goal is to make our academic experience more inclusive, supportive, and fulfilling.

My aims are:

1. To make Python sessions, particularly introductory ones, more gradual

2. To create a dedicated breakout room on Teams where demonstrators can give guided tutorials on using Python for Data Analysis, especially for newcomers.

3. To use Mentimeter to allow students to ask questions anonymously and confidently in lectures.

The success of my first two aims will be measured through short anonymous surveys assessing students’ confidence with Python, alongside informal feedback from peers. I will collaborate closely with staff to refine the pace and structure of computing sessions. While structural changes may only take effect next term, I will advocate early to ensure lasting improvements for future cohorts.

For my final aim, I will encourage lecturers to display a Mentimeter code at the start of each lecture (enforced early November), enabling real-time anonymous questions the lecturer can answer at any point throughout.

As a former Sports Leader and organiser of a French Club for primary students, I’ve developed strong teamwork, communication, and leadership skills—qualities I’ll bring to representing you. It would be my honour to help shape your degree experience to be the best it can be.
